Roane County had 2,995 people of all ages (19.5%) and 986 people under 18 (28.7%) living in poverty. These estimates are from Census 2000.

Roane County's 2nd month enrollment for 2004-2005 is 2,581. Roane County High is at 725 (grades 9-12) and Spencer Middle is at 473 (grades 5-8). Spencer Elementary has 554 (grades K-4) enrolled and Reedy Elementary has 104 (grades PK-5). At Walton Elementary/Middle there are 380 (grades K-8) and at Geary Elementary/Middle there are 345 students (grades PK-8). Spencer Elementary is the only school meeting the School Building Authority's [SBA] "Economies of Scale" requirements for complete SBA funding of new buildings or construction.

Roane County High School [RCHS] is the bi-product of the consolidation of Spencer and Walton High Schools in 1993 and a prime example of false promises made when consolidating schools. School officials guaranteed to provide four levels of Spanish and three levels of German at the new high school.

After the schools were consolidated, RCHS offered only two levels of Spanish compared to German and three levels of Spanish that were being offered at both Walton and Spencer.

As of the 2003-2004 year, Reedy Elementary's status changed from a PK-6 to a PK-5 with Reedy's 6th graders being bussed to Spencer Middle School. Roane County's 10-year facilities plan calls for a new middle school and Reedy's 5th grade to attend the planned school. The Roane County Board of Education is discussing receiving SBA funding and floating a bond for rest of the cost. The Pinecrest site, near the Division of Highways on Route 119, was the top choice among the site-selection committee and is being pursued for the future Spencer Middle School.
