Currently Ritchie County has 4 elementary schools with an enrollment of
approximately 800 students and one middle/high school which was consolidated
in 1993.
The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Butler, plans to make a
proposal to the BOE, requesting from the SBA, funding to implement the
10-year Comprehensive Plan. The plan would close 4 elementary schools and build two new schools in the county, locations undetermined.
This would mean students in Ritchie County will have to endure longer bus rides to attend school.
The one exemplary school in the county, Cairo Elementary School, was closed at the end of the school year in 2002. Those students are now bussed to Smithville, Harrisville, and Ellenboro Elementary Schools.
