Mingo County is a southern county bordering Kentucky. The county is approximately 90 miles from east to west. The length of Mingo County and the winding two lane roads make travel time for students long and difficult.
Sixty-five percent of Mingo County students are on reduced or free lunch. Loss of coal related jobs has lead to many families leaving the area. In 1990 there were 34 schools in the county. In 2003 there are 17 schools, but the state board hopes to have that number consolidated to 12 schools and one vocational-tech center by the 2004/05 year.
Mingo County was #1 in third grade test scores for the 2002-2003 school year.
