On July 1, 2006 David Arritt, Steve Bush, and James Workman were seated as
the new board members until July 2010. The Board elected Peggy Farmer as
president and Steve Bush as vice-president. Patricia Spangler, who
resigned her
position at the July meeting was replaced by Jane White until the November
election when Leon Newman was elected to serve until July 2008.
In November 2006, the Office of Education Performance Audits (OEPA)
conducted performance audits at Oak Hill High School, Valley High School,
and Collins
Middle School as well as assessing the standards in Policy 2320 related to
the central office. In January 2007, the West Virginia Board of Education
called for a State of Emergency in Fayette County and placed the county on
non-approval status. The county has six months to show improvement in
correcting
deficiencies and implementing recommendations presented by the consultant
team.
Fayette County will contribute $331,920 to SBA funding to consolidate elementary schools in the Oak Hill area (Oak Hill, Oak Hill East, and Scarbro). The elementary school is to be completed by the fall of 2008 and will be built on the Oak Hill High School campus.
Beginning in August 2006, Fayetteville schools will be reconfigured into a 7-12 high school and a K-6 elementary school. Fayetteville High will have four additional classrooms (two will be added and two will be renovated from the shop area). Fayetteville Elementary will have to use one of the buildings at Fayetteville Middle.
Gauley Bridge High School and Montgomery Middle School were reconfigured into Valley High and Valley Elementary and Gauley Bridge Elementary in the fall of 2005. There is still a suit in the court system against Fayette County Board of Education.
